And Baby Makes 3!

Well, what we thought was constipation turned out to be a reaction to her formula. So, after 3 formulas and 3 trips to the doctor's office, we finally found one that she can tolerate and poop on. Yesterday was the first day that we finally found a routine that allows Sophia, Mike, and I to take a breath and enjoy each other. I can't believe how big she is getting and she is only in her third week of life. I have to keep reminding myself that she will only be this small for a little while and enjoy her....the laundry and dirty bottles can wait. As long as I continue to remember that then this will be a great summer!

CONSTIPATION and A Mother's Love!

Well, the glamour of bring a new baby home has worn off and I am hit with the reality of what being a mother truly is...and I say "hats off to all you moms!" When I brought Sophia home I thought to myself I can handle anything. Well, I was doing great handling the feedings every 2 hours, her pooping every time I put her in a clean diaper, pumping milk for her when I wasn't feeding her....I even cooked dinner a couple nights! That was all great until last night when constipation overtook our happy home. I got 1 hour of sleep last night and non-stop, heartbreaking crying for the rest of the night....this morning...this afternoon...not to mention tonight. The highlight of my day was trying to force gas from Sophia's body by taking her temp rectally! That was messy!

Tonight, I sit in front of the computer in my family room/basement so that Mike can get some sleep for work tomorrow. Sophia is asleep in my arms, the only way she will sleep while she is in pain. I, being the mother, sit here venting to everyone reading this and worrying about how Sophia is feeling and trying to figure out how to convince Mike that the next child will never cry and never become constipated.

All joking aside, Over the last 14 days, I truly have come to understand a mother's love.
Again, I praise all you mom's out there and say to my mom, "Sorry for anything I ever did that made you feel the way I feel right now." Also, mom, thanks for all your help with my little girl. I couldn't do it without you!

Family Visits

Well, this has been a busy weekend! Sophia met her family for the first time. On Friday, she met her Auntie Adrienne and Aunite Teri-Ann. She tried to sleep through the visit, but her aunites found it nessessary to look at her HUGE feet 100 times!

Saturday was even a bigger day because she got to get out of the house. We took a family trip to her Nana Deb's house. Lots of pictures were taken and Nana Deb tried to change her diaper....Sophia peed on her while doing it!

She also got to meet Don and her Great Aunt Donna.

On Sunday, Her Nana and Papa Ferrara came up to visit. She slept and cuddled most of the time in everyone's arms. She did flash those big eyes a couple of times for everyone to see.

1st Doctor Appointment

Well, Sophia had her first doctor's appointment today. She did great and let a great impression! She slept through the whole examine until it came time for her diaper to come off. Just as the doctor began taking the diaper off she did a "super-duper" poop! Let's say the she sounded like a bean-eating truck driver and smelled like a skunk! It was so perfectly timed. Mike and I couldn't stop laughing. The doctor found it funny too.

Anyway, the doctor is pleased with her weight gain. He said in the next few weeks she will be able to have visitors other than immediate family. We will have more about visitors after her appointment next week. I can't wait for you all to meet her!

We Feel Like Parents

Well she is home!
Mike is convinced that they give the babies something in the bottles to make them quiet and "gas free" in the hospital. The baby that slept all day and night in the hospital without ever crying, got it all out last night. I spent my first night (well, 2 hours of the night) sleeping in the rocker with her snuggled in my arms while daddy got some well needed shut eye. The rest of the night I spent entertaining my wide awake and "very gassy" baby.

She makes it very clear that she does not like to be alone and that the best place is in mommy and daddy's arms. A habit we will not break just yet!

I'm Coming Home!

This morning Sophia graduated to the "Big Girl Nursery." Mike and I got the news today that we can bring our baby girl home tomorrow night...1 week to the day we went in to have her.

Over the weekend Sophia began eating without any problems. Each day the doctors set a goal of how much she needed to eat. She had to eat 40-50 cc every three hours for the last three days. As of yesterday's 3 am feeding she was taking as much as 110cc at a time! Our little piglet will be fattened up in no time. She has not gained any weight, but she hasn't lost any more then the 10% all new babies loose the first few days of life.

The next week Mike and I will be home working on fattening our little girl up so that everyone can come and see her. As of now, per doctors orders, no visitors. She needs to gain enough weight that if she gets an infection and looses weight she won't drop under birth weight.

Mike and I want to thank everyone for their understanding. I will be putting tons more pictures on this site for everyone to see her! We can't wait to share her with all of you! She is a great cuddler and we want everyone to get "cuddle time."

Mike and I want to say thank you to everyone for your thoughts and support. We are very lucky to have such wonderful friends and family.

I'm Here!

Well, So much for a planned induction.
Sophia Rose Ferrara arrived on May 9th after 30 + hours of labor.

My water broke 6:02am on May 8th. Mike and I went straight to the hospital and was admitted. I wasn't at all showing signs of preparing for her to be born, so I was given 2 rounds of cervadil (during the day on Tuesday and through the night).

At around 4:00am on the 9th Sophia's heart rate started to drop so the doctor had the cervadil pulled and started Pitocin, so I could deliver her sooner. At 11:30 am I was 3cm dilated and 80% affaced. At 12:40 pm I called the doctor in because she was coming with force.

Sophia was born at 1:21pm. Due to the long labor and quick delivery she did have some breathing difficulty and was rushed to the special care nursery. At this point, her breathing is great, her heart rate is stable, and she is regulating her own body temperature. She has completed her 48 hours of antibiotics and we are waiting word from the pedi that she is clear of infections.

At this point Sophia, Mike and I will remain in the hospital for a few more days. Due to the ordeal that she has been through over the last couple days, she has to be taught to eat. Babies that don't feed the first 24 hours after birth need to be taught this skill. She is doing great and now that she is off the antibiotics she should be more interested in eating. The quicker she gains weight the faster she can come home. We will update you as soon as we know more.

Still Waiting!

I have been up since 3:00am with cramping, hunger pains, and a foot in my rib. I am finally at the point where I am ready to have Sophia here. If you asked me a week ago if I was ready, I would have told you that I wasn't. Boy that changed fast! Don't get me wrong, I love being pregnant. Feeling Sophia kick and move is amazing! BUT, with her as big as she is she has taken over every part of my body!

Mike and I have doctors appointments today and tomorrow. Hopefully, she will have made some progress towards getting ready to make her appearance in the world. But for those who know a little about her already...she has her own agenda and sticks to it!

Two Days and Counting!

Well, Mike and I spent 2 hours at the hospital today for our daily check-up and the decision was made that I am going to be induced. This will take place on Thursday. So, I will be a mom by Mother's Day. It hasn't quite hit Mike that she will be here by this weekend. For me...it hit about 13 minutes ago!

I CAN'T BELIEVE 40 WEEKS IS OVER! WE ARE GOING TO BE PARENTS!

Mommy and Daddy Page from Baby Blog

My Mommy
My mommy is a teacher in Tewksbury. Her name is Sandy and she is 33 years old! She always dreamed about being a mommy, so that makes me her, "Dream Come True!"
Mommy and daddy met 10 years ago when they were in college in Boston, Ma. Mommy says she doesn't remember how they met, all she knows is she can't remember life without my daddy.

My Daddy
My daddy is what you would call, "A Jack of All Trades!" My daddy can do ANYTHING! His name is Mike and he is 32 years old. My mommy told me she would have married daddy a lot sooner, but he didn't want children. Daddy used to say, "It cost a million dollars to raise a child to 18...do you know what I could do with a million dollars?" Well, somehow my mommy worked her magic on daddy and convienced him it was worth it.
Daddy asked mommy to marry him July 7, 2005 on the rocks in Gloucester, Ma. A year later on July 23, 2006 they were married in Gloucester. A month later I was on the way!
